About Ryan
Mile 2 Consulting was founded by Dr. Ryan Stewart. Ryan is a career educator who has served as a state secretary of education, school district administrator, non-profit executive director, teacher, and instructional coach. In founding Mile 2, Ryan saw firsthand the need to provide educational organizations with cutting edge research, data, and management tools to foster innovation, improve organizational performance, and dramatically improve student outcomes - especially for those students who have been traditionally underserved by our public education system
Ryan was appointed Secretary of Education for the State of New Mexico by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. He was the first African-American to serve as the state's Chief State School Officer. As Secretary, Ryan led the state's Public Education Department where he oversaw the state's education policy and program development, funding distribution, and operational management.
Prior to his appointment, Ryan served as the Regional Executive Director for Partners in School Innovation. Partners in School Innovation supports districts and schools serving predominantly low income students of color to design and implement research-based, systemic approaches to school transformation.
Ryan also served as the Executive Director of the Office of School Improvement and Innovation at the School District of Philadelphia. In that role, Ryan oversaw the District’s efforts to foster innovation in line with the District’s strategic improvement goals.
Prior to his work in Philadelphia, Ryan earned his doctorate in education leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He also previously worked in California for the New Teacher Center, a national non-profit specializing in new teacher induction, and served as a coach for new teachers as well as a professional developer in math instruction and in establishing professional learning communities.
Ryan began his career as a math and science teacher in California. In addition to his doctorate, he received his B.A. in economics from Stanford University.
Ryan is the proud father of a middle school student and the husband of an amazingly talented educator. Fun fact - the name Mile 2 was inspired by some of his son’s earliest writings
